Kenya’s Big 5 & Walking Safari

Three of Kenya’s best private wildlife destinations are on the itinerary of this safari and you have a chance to experience them in different ways. Your adventure opens on the rim of Africa’s Rift Valley on the Laikipia Plateau where you explore big game country on foot with Samburu warriors for company and a camel train to carry the luggage as you move between camps. Then it is a change of scene at Porini Rhino Camp, set in the Laikipia’s famous Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where you can expect to see great wildlife including East Africa’s largest population of black rhino on your game drives and guided walks.

A flight from Laikipia takes you quickly and conveniently to the Masai Mara, your final destination. Home to the seasonal Wildebeest Migration, the Mara is at its most dramatic when the herds are resident between July and November. This reserve also has a stellar reputation for game viewing throughout the year and your accommodation – Porini Mara Camp – is a small and intimate tented camp situated in the exclusive Ol Kinyei wildlife conservancy, a successful local Maasai-run conservation initiative.

Adventurous, extremely comfortable and with an emphasis on providing a diverse wildlife and cultural experience, this tour is ideal for travellers looking for a slightly different safari to the mainstream. Its lovely accommodation and high standards of service mean it is also suited to fit honeymooners and active couples.

Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Travel to Laikipia | 2 Nights

Kenya

Your safari begins at Nairobi’s domestic Wilson Airport where you board a short scheduled flight to Nanyuki Airport. Here you are met and driven for about two hours to your tented camp – either Nayasura or Tumaren – enjoying wildlife sightings on the way. You settle in and have a short walk with your guide to get a feel for the landscape – this is the Laikipia region, part of the elevated lands of the Great Rift Valley and an area of thriving private reserves and wildlife conservancies. You enjoy sunset and drinks at camp before sitting down to a candle-lit supper in anticipation of the next two days of adventure.

Days 2-3: A Walking Safari

Up arrow

The day starts early: it is best to head out before the heat of the day and to catch the more interesting animals on the move. Moving on foot with your Samburu guides, you notice more details than you would from a vehicle. Your guides point out both the big and the small – you may see giraffe, zebra, big cats and hyenas in the distance as well as birds, insects and medicinal plants up close. Your camp is coming with you, too, borne on the back of a Samburu camel train and set up for you to walk into at the end of the day. It is easy walking with lots to see, and on the second day you have an afternoon of swimming and fishing in the river to look forward to.

Days 4-5: Land of the Rhino

You transfer back to the airstrip after breakfast for the flight to the Masai Mara. On landing, you are met and transferred to the Ol Kinyei Conservancy and Porini Mara Camp where you settle in for a 3-night stay. Set close to the Masai Mara and on the path of the seasonal Wildebeest Migration, this private and exclusive location gives you the advantage of excellent game viewing plus very few other vehicles. Guides can drive off-road for close-up sightings and are allowed to lead walking safaris and spot-lit night drives, all adding up to deliver a comprehensive Masai Mara experience. Game drives are conducted in the conservancy but you also enjoy a full-day safari in the Masai Mara complete with picnic lunch.

Day 9: Farewell to Kenya

Up arrow

There is time for an early morning game drive in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy before returning to camp for breakfast and goodbyes. A late morning flight takes you back to Nairobi’s Wilson airport where you arrive at lunchtime for the end of this tour.
